Rio Roses from Selecta One
Equiflor is excited to introduce our fourth breeder: Selecta One
History:
As worldwide cut carnation market leader, Selecta cut flowers offers a wide assortment of top quality assortment Carnations, Gerberas, Gypsophila, Solidago and Chrysanthemums. Quality and sustainability drive their innovations in the product and marketing sector, while responsibility and reliability are the basic principles when dealing with their customers, their staff and the environment.
Selecta cut flowers is part of the Selecta one group, a world leader in breeding, producing and marketing vegetative propagated ornamental plants. Through their network of independent firms, Selecta One handles everything from breeding and development to production and marketing and sales management.
Breeding activities include bedding and balcony plants, poinsettias, perennials and cut flowers. With eleven production sites and distribution companies in Europe, Africa, Asia and America, the corporate group serves all relevant markets worldwide.
Breeding:
Selecta’s breeding is managed and organized at their headquarters in Stuttgart, where most of their breeders are based. However, different breeding activities are performed all around the world. With carnations, crosses are done in Tenerife, and later harvested seeds are shipped to Germany where they are germinated. The small seedlings travel to Kenya, where they are grown into flowering plants. Only the best-performing ones are then selected for further trials.
In order to make sure that Selecta provides their customers with varieties that are perfectly adapted to their respective growing conditions, they perform trials in facilities located in Kenya, Colombia, Japan, and Germany. In addition, their most promising candidates are trialed at customers’ locations worldwide at a very early stage.
The production and supply of healthy plant material is based in their 360-square-meter laboratory, with workspace for diagnostics, tissue culture, and biotechnology, with almost 250 square meters of culture rooms. These facilities are further enhanced by modern rooms for microscopy, vase life testing, and seed storage.
Criteria Used to Assess the Best Varieties:
In breeding, one major goal for Selecta is the creation of new colors, flower shapes, and plant features. Although the focus differs slightly in all cut flower crops, flower quality is mainly determined by the long-lasting quality during storage, transport and trading as well as by vase life. Selecta’s new biotechnology lab and the new facilities for professional vase life testing have enabled them to initiate a research project with the aim of developing molecular markers that are linked to flower longevity; these markers will help them in the future to select varieties with improved vase life.
Selecta’s motto, “We love to grow”, unites everyone in the company. It illustrates the determination, understanding and passion from every member of the team. “In the ornamental segments,” said Selecta One CEO Nils Klemm, “both aspects are important: technically highly qualified breeders who also have an eye for and understanding of the value of ‘ornamental traits’ – in other words, the beauty our products can add to the world – as well as cutting-edge infrastructure to apply advanced breeding methods.”
We would like to hear your opinion on the selected varieties provided by Selecta One. Please send us an email to marketing@equiflor.com and share your feedback!
