1. Receiving and Unpacking Carnations

Inspection: Upon arrival, closely inspect carnations for any signs of stress, damage, or disease, including:

  • Wilting or limp stems indicate potential dehydration.
  • Signs of ethylene exposure, such as premature wilting or leaf yellowing. Carnations are ethylene sensitive.
  • Brown spots or petal edges may suggest a botrytis infection.
  • Ensure stems show vibrant color, a sign of freshness and health.
  • For Standard Carnations, ensure the stems have closed blooms but show full color.
  • For Spray (mini) Carnations, make sure stems have closed blooms and show some color on the lower buds.

Hydration: Immediate hydration is crucial to revive and maintain carnations.

  • For dry-packed carnations, trim about 1 inch off the stems and use an instant hydrating treatment to facilitate water uptake.
  • Use a clean, non-metallic container with fresh, cold water mixed with a floral preservative.
  • Chill the flowers in a floral cooler at 34-38°F with 75-85% relative humidity for at least two hours to ensure proper hydration, maintaining good airflow around the flowers.
  • Implement a first-in/first-out rotation system to ensure flowers remain fresh.
2. Preparing Carnations for Display or Sale
  • Cut stems at a 45-degree angle to enhance water absorption. Always cut stems between the nodes.
  • Remove lower leaves to prevent bacterial growth in the water.
  • Use a clean vase with fresh water mixed with a floral preservative.
  • Place in moderate, indirect light to avoid rapid dehydration.
  • Regularly check the water level and add fresh water as needed.
3. Preparing Carnations for Display or Sale
  • Change the water and clean the vase every two to three days.
  • Keep an eye out for signs of pest infestations or diseases.
  • Trim any wilted or discolored petals and leaves to maintain a fresh appearance.
  • Always maintain correct temperature and humidity levels to prevent botrytis from developing.
4. Packaging and Transportation

  • During transportation, maintain a cool, humid environment to reduce stress on the flowers.

  • Recommend keeping carnations in a cool spot away from direct sunlight.
