- Separate work space from display space
Your customers want to see the gorgeous products you produce, not the disorder that comes with the creative process! That’s why it’s important to have your floral design room in a separate area, away from the display room. The design room should have easy access to your vase and equipment storage, as well as a walk-in cooler for your unused flowers.
- Put your display cooler front and center
The first thing customers should see when they walk into your shop is a cooler filled with beautiful flower arrangements. Ideally, the cooler should be placed directly across from the front door, should be well-lit, and should contain arrangements at different price points to encourage impulse buying.
- Use shelving to display additional items
Showcase the non-floral items you sell specialty containers, stuffed animals, balloons, chocolates, holiday items on shelving installed along the walls in the display room. Create as much eye-level display space as you can without making the room look cluttered. Make sure you group themed items, such as holiday containers or baby gifts, for easier shopping.
- Make it comfortable and easy to shop
As many customers will want assistance with their flower designs, add a table and seating to your lobby area. A counter-height table with stools is perfect for both a long consultation such as weddings and funerals and quick perusals of sample books. The taller table also makes the room appear more open, and if you can add a couple of extra comfy chairs or a loveseat without making the space look too crowded, do so.
- Create a clearly designated check-out area
Set up a counter-height desk or table in an area that’s out of the way of customers browsing in the display area. This is your designated check-out area. Hang a “Check-Out” sign or place your cash register or computer on top, so customers clearly know where to go to pay and pick up arrangements and make sure it’s high enough so that customers can sign credit card receipts without stooping.
- Change your decorations with the seasons
To further increase your foot traffic and sales, make sure your shop always reflects the current holiday or season. From decorated trees or wreaths at Christmas, to hearts and chocolates on Valentine’s Day, to Easter bunnies and baskets, there’s no end to the amount of creativity you can put in to decorating your shop. And take the decorations outdoors as well, with plants that reflect the seasons and draw customers in.
