The past year has been full of change, both in the physical world we live in every day and the digital world we rely on more and more. That merging of the physical and digital worlds is at the heart of Pantone’s choice for the 2022 Color of the Year: Very Peri, a periwinkle blue with a violet-red undertone.
For the first time in their history, Pantone created a new color specifically for the Color of the Year. They chose periwinkle blue as this color is seen everywhere in digital design and gaming while also existing throughout nature and the physical world — which we as florists know well. The addition of violet-red to the periwinkle brings energy and makes the color a perfect representation of blue’s stability and red’s vitality and newness.
2022 is the ideal time for a color like Very Peri. After all, we’re moving into a new world with so many possibilities. When announcing their Color of the Year, Pantone wrote that it “illustrates the fusion of modern life and how color trends in the digital world are being manifested in the physical world and vice versa.”
This year, the decision to create a new color was vital to Pantone’s selection process; the world has changed so much, and we all have a new vision of our future. And with that vision comes the hope that our futures will be bright. “It is literally the happiest and the warmest of all the blue hues,” said Pantone Color Institute’s Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman. “Because of that red undertone, it introduces an empowering feeling of newness, and newness is what we’re looking for.”
Now that you know the 2022 Color of the Year, you probably have a lot of ideas going through your head of how you’ll use it in your floral arrangements. We can’t wait to see what you come up with — and how you’ll communicate newness, creativity, and joyfulness in your beautiful creations!
