It’s hard to come up with a more important element of floral design than color. That’s why those of us in the floral industry are always paying close attention to color trends from season to season and year to year.
One of the most influential sources for what’s hot in the world of color is Pantone, and they just revealed the Color of the Year 2019: Living Coral. This bright coral shade is described by Pantone as “An animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” This warm, expressive color will be seen everywhere in 2019, and it symbolizes optimism and joy – much needed in these turbulent times!
The first Pantone Color of the Year, Cerulean, was named in 2000; recent years have given us Ultra Violet (2018), Greenery (2017), Rose Quartz and Serenity (2016), and Marsala (2015). In order to determine the Color of the Year, Pantone pays close attention to colors that have appeared in branding efforts by major companies. In recent months, coral has been seen in campaigns from Airbnb and Apple, which is a sign of its influence in the design world. Pantone also looks to what people are doing in fashion and art, beauty, entertainment, what they’re posting about on social media, what they’re wearing and buying. All of this research led to the announcement of Living Coral as the ideal color for 2019.
“In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy,” Pantone states. “Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of PANTONE 16-1546 Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. …Representing the fusion of modern life, PANTONE Living Coral is a nurturing color that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media.”
To celebrate this year’s announcement, Pantone teamed up with Tribute Portfolio, a new brand of independent hotels from Marriott, to create a pop-up at Art Basel Miami: Pantone Pantry. This colorful installation featured pops of Living Coral in a boldly reimagined concierge desk and hotel room. It was unveiled at the Royal Palms South Beach, and will travel to Savannah, Georgia and Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
Now that you know the Pantone Color of the Year 2019, it’s time to think about how you can use it in your business. There are so many ways to present Living Coral in floral arrangements, as it perfectly ties into the warm, natural trend so many customers are looking for today.
